Mr. Spurling obtained a B.A. degree in Law from Trinity College, Oxford University, U.K. He attained the English Bar qualification from The Council of Legal Education, London, England and was called to the English bar in 1976 and to the Bermuda Bar in 1977. He received both his B.A., Business Administration, and M.B.A., from the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. His early education began at St. George’s Grammar School in Bermuda, and continued through Grade 13 matriculation at Ridley College, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Spurling retired in 2005 as the Senior Partner of a major Bermuda law firm where he specialized in the practice of Corporate and Commercial Law with an emphasis on Insurance/Reinsurance Law.

He has held many positions in church, civic, business and government organizations including election as Member of the Bermuda Parliament in which he served as the Government Whip. He founded the St David’s Island Historical Society and the Bermuda Pilot Gig Club.

Mr. Spurling was a director of several public companies over many years including BF&M Limited, Ascendant Ltd, Bermuda Press, WP Stewart & Co Ltd and Butterfield Bank, chairing audit, special and governance committees. He also serves as a director of a number of private companies.

He is currently a member of Mid-Ocean Club, Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, and Coral Beach & Tennis Club.
